Acapulco Gold ($268/oz.)

STRAIN OVERVIEW

Considered by many to be one of the greatest, if not most popular, cannabis strains of all time, Acapulco Gold has been lauded by both “cannoisseurs” and novices alike for its unique, gold-tinged color and powerful potency.

First recorded in the U.S. back in 1964, it was extremely popular during the counterculture movement of the 1960s and was known to be a favorite strain amongst several notable figures, including the late actress Carol Wayne, famed 60s and Doors/Jim Morrison photographer Paul Ferrara, longtime NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle, and even Jack Nicholson.

Traditionally cultivated in the Guerrero Mountains on the outskirts of the Mexican city of Acapulco, the strain his known to have “mind-blowing effects” that are attributed to a long growing season and the plant’s natural ability to adapt. One-time cannabis smuggler and now music concert promoter Gary Tovar has said that Acapulco Gold’s distinctive color is due to the way the plant ages and dries by the winds coming off the Pacific. Unfortunately, when cultivated outside its native territory, it’s considered to be substantially less potent than its native counterpart. Even more unfortunate, it’s becoming harder and harder to find due to more growers moving their operations indoors. That, and the difficulty in actually growing it as there are no real clear guidelines for how to do so.

Still, there are batches that do spring up here and there, and if you should be one of the lucky ones to come across it, you’ll discover a strain whose deep orange hairs and heavy gold, brown, and green resin colors resemble that of a thick golden nugget. Once broken up, a strong aroma of burnt toffee lingers on the nose, with a pleasant earthy, woody, and even nutty flavor when smoked. A flavor that’s strong enough to match its high, yet mild enough to leave you wanting more.

THE HIGH

A sativa-dominant hybrid, the original Acapulco Gold has been crowned one of the greatest sativas to ever flower, with most of that greatness being attributed to its powerful THC makeup of up to 26%! That being said, the strong THC presence is nicely balanced, with a cerebral high capable of lifting one’s mood without being too hard-hitting or overbearing. That pleasant cerebral high is accompanied by a calming body high that compliments it just right.

MEDICAL BENEFITS

Acapulco Gold’s powerful cerebral high makes it a great strain for those suffering from anxiety, stress, and PTSD, while its euphoric, mood-lifting effects provide a powerful relief from symptoms of stress and depression.
