As if conquering the world of online streaming wasn’t enough, it appears Netflix has now set its sights on conquering the cannabis industry too, albeit temporarily, with its own line of TV-themed marijuana strains that gives new meaning to the popular “Netflix and Chill” euphemism.
Partnering up with Vice-owned creative agency Carrot and California-based dispensary Alternative Herbal Health Service, Netflix recently created a limited-edition collection of 12 unique marijuana strains in an effort to promote their newest series, the cannabis-themed sitcom Disjointed. The 12 themed strains include “Banana Stand Kush” for Arrested Development, “Camp Firewood” for Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later, and “Poussey Riot” for Orange is the New Black, among others.
Apparently Carrot began working with the dispensary about six months ago to carefully curate the strains, providing descriptions of feelings and moods for certain shows and then working with the dispensary to pair those shows with a corresponding strain. For example, indica-heavy strains for lighter shows and sativa strains for more dramatic ones. Next came the clever naming and packaging, puns and all, followed by an actual redesign of the dispensary’s look and layout to mimic the one featured on Disjointed.
Of course Netflix was careful to ensure they followed all the proper legalities, with a team of lawyers working closely with the state of California and the city of West Hollywood to determine how the buds could be distributed without Netflix or Carrot physically handling any of them. Whether the lawyers and everyone else involved actually “touched” the product is another story. Still, with over 27 pounds (over 430 ounces) sold over the weekend and even more buzz on social media (see what we did there?), it’s safe to say the limited-edition collection has clearly been a success. Yes, cannabis sells. Pair it with a good TV show and it sells even better.
