Every year The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts a Costume Institute Exhibition that also serves as the theme for that year’s Met Gala, and this year’s theme, titled “Rei Kawakubo/COMME des GARÇONS: Art of the In-Between,” celebrates legendary Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo and her Comme des Garçons label.

Often dubbed “the Oscars of the east coast,” the annual Met Gala is arguably one of fashion’s most prestigious evenings, and tonight’s gathering is sure to have a who’s who of the fashion and entertainment worlds in attendance, including the queen of fashion herself, Vogue’s Anna Wintour, who also serves as the queen of the guest list being that invites are doled out solely at her discretion.

Kawakubo will be just the second living designer to host a solo exhibit at the museum (Yves Saint Laurent being the first back in 1983), and to celebrate the rare honor, The Met is creating a “Pocket Shop” concept store that will include 11 limited-edition items consisting of graphic tees, totes, wallets, and the new NikeLab x CDG Pegasus 83s that Nike made exclusively for the occasion.

Items will range in price from $65 to $175 and will be available for purchase at The Met’s online store beginning tomorrow, May 2nd. Tickets to tonight’s gala are another story. 🙂
