In the mid-1980s, a young, relatively unknown fashion designer created Coca-Cola’s first-ever clothing collection—a line of licensed leisurewear featuring a trendsetting Coca-Cola long-sleeve rugby shirt that became a surprise hit among millions of Americans, instantly launching the unknown designer into the fashion and pop-cultural stratosphere. That designer, of course, was Tommy Hilfiger, and now, more than 30 years later, he’s reuniting with Coca-Cola once again for a reissue of those original signature styles, albeit with a more contemporary look that aims to fuse fashion and pop culture for an entirely new generation.
Dubbed the “Tommy Jeans Coca-Cola Capsule Collection,” the line features both men’s and women’s pieces from the original ‘80s styles that have been redesigned with modern-day silhouettes and a new logo combining both the TOMMY JEANS and Coca-Cola marks. Beyond a reimagined take on the classic rugby shirt, the line also features sweatshirts, hoodies, tees, shorts, and even sports jackets.
“The Coca-Cola collection we launched in the ‘80s was bold, bright, and instantly recognizable,” said Avery Baker, Chief Brand Officer at Tommy Hilfiger. “This re-edition builds on the originals, celebrating the optimistic and youthful spirit at the heart of both brands, while adding a modern street-style twist for the next generation.”
Added Hilfiger, “It’s a lot of fun to work with Coca-Cola again. Due to the fact that it’s part of pop culture makes a lot of sense, and I thought a collaboration with a great, iconic American brand would be epic.”
