Timex x Todd Snyder Silver Mesh Marlin Watch ($209)
Timex watches have always been known for their affordable reliability rather than their style and sophistication. Put in more cultural terms, they’ve always been “the best watch money can buy”—a no-nonsense, all-American classic timepiece that even the likes of former President George W. Bush has worn.
Lately, though, Timex has been making a small comeback of sorts, pushing the widely recognized brand onto the wrists of the hip and fashionable elite with coveted vintage drops from its 4-year-old Timex Archive Division and limited-edition collaborations with the likes of Todd Snyder and Mr. Porter. And just last year, the brand came out with its first hand-winding timepiece in 30 years—the Timex Marlin, a reimagined version of the original 1960s classic that featured a series of advertisements from famed TV anchor John Cameron Swayze along with the now famous slogan, “Takes a licking and keeps on ticking.”
The Marlin was an instant hit, with coveted versions like the Todd Snyder Blackout Edition and others offered in limited quantities and selling out fast, and now the latest edition to the popular collection looks to sell out just as quickly.
Another collaboration with menswear designer Todd Snyder, the Marlin Mesh is a follow-up to the original Marlin vintage design, albeit with a sleek polished silver face and even sleeker steel mesh bracelet. As with the previous Marlins, the mesh one forgoes Timex’s usual Quartz movement in favor of a mechanical one, offering the ability to own a classic hand-wound timepiece along with classic good looks to match—all at a price that won’t break the bank. Yes, Timex is once again “the best watch money can buy,” except this time, it also looks like it.
