Famed New York City eatery Bubby’s has been a fixture in the NYC restaurant scene for more than 27 years, serving up simple American comfort food in a warm, friendly environment. From pies and pancakes to biscuits and burgers, the renowned restaurant has made a success of perfecting classic American staples, and now those staples include yet another soon-to-be American classic—CBD!
Yes, CBD is now being served at Bubby’s in the form of a sweetener called Azuca, which takes its name from the spanish word for sugar and is the result of four years of work from Bubby’s owner Ron Silver, who says he’s always had a passion for cannabis.
“CBD is like the penicillin of the 21st century,” Silver told AM New York. And according to Silver, his new Azuca sugar brand is the perfect example of it. “The whole thing about these products—you know exactly what your dose is, and you really know how long it’s going to take effect, which is a big thing in this kind of medicine.”
So what are these products he speaks of? Well, Silver is offering up his in-house Azuca brand as a sweetener option for diners to put in their coffees, teas, and lemonades. Right now they’re only available in diluted form at Bubby’s Tribeca and Meatpacking locations, where $10 will get you a 25 mg dose of the stuff in your coffee, tea, or lemonade, which should “kick in” about 15 minute after drinking. Whether you’ll actually feel that kick is another story, especially if you’re a daily or weekly cannabis consumer, but people have likened the effects to a relaxed body calm without the stoned, paranoia feelings you often get from THC.
As for introducing a CBD product like Azuca in a family-friendly restaurant like Bubby’s, Silver was quick to compare it to the alcohol served at his establishments. “It’s a lot more family-friendly than whiskey,” said the father of four, who sees middle-aged folks seeking pain and insomnia relief as a beneficial target for his newfound concoction.
“People have used cannabis for thousands of years,” Silver added. “I think it’s a natural part of being human.”
