New Balance + Todd Snyder 998 Dark & Stormy Sneaker ($218)
Having already created three best-selling sneaker collections with New Balance, Todd Snyder is certainly no stranger to working with the Boston-based sneaker brand, and the duo’s latest collab looks to continue their trend of success, albeit with a little kick that takes inspiration from the designer’s favorite summertime cocktail—the Dark & Stormy.
Putting a twist on the popular New Balance 998, the limited-edition New Balance + Todd Snyder 998 “Dark & Stormy” is a refreshing reissue of the original that debuted back in 1983. While at first appearing blacked-out throughout, a closer look reveals a combination of marine blues, deep ocean blacks, and a smooth Horween leather trim on the heel and tongue. Meanwhile, the base is rounded out with white specks and a white bottom sole that offer up a nice contrast against the sneaker’s dark colors, all of which lay on the brand’s cushy ABZORB midsole.
“With its flavor contrasts and ombre hues, the Dark & Stormy is pretty much a perfectly designed beverage,” said Snyder. “Maybe it’s the rum and ginger beer talking, but it felt like the ideal reference for an elevated yet easygoing summertime sneaker.”
Indeed it does, and the sneaker certainly lends itself equally well to a pair of jeans as it does a pair of shorts, offering up a refreshing alternative to the usual sea of white and cream-colored kicks being worn during the summer season.
