Adidas Deerupt Runner Shoes ($70-$120)
Taking cues from its vast archive of innovative sneaker designs, Adidas has created a new pair of kicks that forgo its iconic three stripes design in favor of a newer, more modern motif that the brand’s been toying with of late—the grid.
Called the “Deerupt,” the new sneakers borrow from a midsole webbing that first appeared on Adidas running shoes in the 1970s and 80s in both the Adidas Marathons as well as the Adidas New Yorks, with a “toe-down” design that was fine-tuned to look as good in person and it doesn in your Instagram feed.
“We looked at the strengths of the graphical quality of that net and reinterpreted it and applied it to a modern silhouette,” said Adidas Originals Senior Designer James Thompson.
Installing the grid-like webbing throughout the shoe’s entirety made way for the design team to skip unnecessary embellishments in favor of a cleaner, more simplified look that puts the webbing form factor front and center.
“There are some things that are such a visual impact that it becomes almost the branding itself,“ said Oddbjorn Stavseng, Senior Director of global design at Adidas. “The graphical quality of the grid is so intrinsically Adidas. Maybe not to everybody, but over time, people will grow to understand that.”
The Adidas Deerupts are currently available both online and at Adidas stores and retailers and come in various color combos, including the red/white/black and blue/white/black ones below.
