While the red carpet at any awards show is always a place to make a fashion statement, this year’s red carpet at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards was the place to make a different sort of statement—one that protested sexual assault, harassment, and inequality in the workplace by wearing all black in support of the recent #metoo movement.
Of course, the men at these sort of events are typically already clad in black in the form of a black tie and tuxedo, so to help show their support and make it clear where they stood, many of the males opted to wear black shirts in solidarity with Hollywood’s leading women. The result? A bold take on classic formal wear that added a breath of fresh air to the usual sea of black and white (and sometimes blue) we often see at these events. Contrasting textures and patterns with bold embellishments and accessories, many of the men were able to make the often tacky black-on-black look a little more sophisticated, proving that a little creativity can go a long way in bringing a dated look to back to life.
Both James Franco and Kit Harington made use of velvet, with the former sporting a dashing velvet black Ferragamo dinner jacket coupled with tailored black trousers and sleek, polished dressed shoes, while the latter went with a classic black Dior Homme tuxedo with peak lapels, black shirt and bowtie, and black velvet slip-ons to finish off the look. And while rapper/actor Common (in Giorgio Armani) and others also sported black button-downs, Fargo’s Ewan McGregor added a little twist to his with an off-black tuxedo shirt that provided a nice textured contrast to the rest of his getup.
Beyond the all-black button-downs, most of the men in attendance also sported a Time’s Up lapel pin in support of the newly created organization that stands against sexual assault, harassment, and inequality in the workplace. The pin, coupled with pocket squares of various colors and textures, provided yet another tasteful contrast to many of the black-on-black looks sported throughout the evening.
