One thing we love about awards season—besides all the gaffes and poor judgement moments (of which there are many), you always get a solid preview of all the formal style trends to come, and the Golden Globes this past Sunday definitely didn’t disappoint (poor judgement moments and all).
There was a ton of incredible acting talent coupled with a ton of great fashion taste, whether through their own sense of style or thanks to an overpaid stylist, and there was definitely a good variety of pieces to mull over and consider for your next formal affair.
Some of our favorites were easily the double-breasted, and of course who better to rock it then the epitome of male style himself, Mr. Tom Ford. Not only was the uber-talented designer and director nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay for his dark neo-noir psychological thriller Nocturnal Animals, but he was also nominated amongst many of his peers for his outfits themselves—half the room was wearing Tom Ford, including a very stylish Justin Timberlake, who opted for a single-button gray jacket top with thick black lapels and black pocket accents to match his classic black slacks.
But Timberlake wasn’t the only one to mix up the classic tuxedo jacket for something a bit more colorful. We also saw style icon Ryan Gosling and the talented Jeremy Renner forgoing the usual black tuxedo top in favor of a white one, with Gosling sporting a Gucci dinner jacket with an all-white shirt, black bowtie, and red rose boutonniere in place of a pocket square and Renner choosing a Boss jacket with a black-studded white shirt, black bowtie, and classic black folded pocket square.
Yes, the trend this year seems to be mixing and matching along with the move from a classic one or two-button jacket to a double and, in some cases, even single-breasted one, and while we certainly appreciate the attempt to add a little something something to the classic tuxedo look, it’s important to note that these attempts aren’t for everyone. Just because Timberlake and Gosling can sport a white colored tuxedo jacket, doesn’t mean you can. They are, after all, quite famous and good looking (not to say you aren’t), but beyond that, they also have a certain body type and style that makes those colored jackets work.
And the same goes with the double-breasted. Tom Ford will always look good in a tuxedo, especially his own, and ditto for Chris Pine, double-breasted or not. But for certain body types—particularly those a bit more, eh, rounded—a double-breasted top isn’t always the most flattering choice.
Our reco? Get inspired for sure and take note to be certain, but don’t go thinking that just because the likes of Gosling, Pine, and Redmayne could pull it off on a red carpet means you can too. Always be sure to try on for fit and style first, then opt for the look that best suits you, and not necessarily the man you wish was you. Yes, like the lovable Ryan Gosling.
