It wasn’t much of a surprise this past summer when Stella McCartney, the popular womenswear designer and daughter of legendary Beatles’ frontman Sir Paul McCartney, announced she was planning on coming out with her own line of menswear clothing. After all, she did serve as an apprentice under renown Savile Row tailor Edward Sexton (her father’s tailor) after college and her womenswear designs have always seemed to give off somewhat of a male-inspired influence, often looking and feeling as though they could have just as easily been taken from a boyfriend’s closet as they could from the women wearing them.

Then her husband and Hunter (Wellington boots) creative director Alasdhair Willis showed up in a black four-button double-breasted suit with peak lapels at an event during Spring/Summer 2017 Fashion Week in Paris last month, and our suspicions were right—she knows just what it takes, and then some, to create a streamlined menswear collection capable of looking good on just about any modern-day gentleman, be it the more casual techie/startup kind or the more formal suit-and-tie one. But her husband’s getup was just a little tease for the fashion elite, and last week the rest of us were all privy to the entire collection at an event in London, and oh what a collection it was.

The new menswear line takes inspiration from various subcultures and aesthetics, pulling on everything from sportswear and formalwear to grunge and streetwear, with a heavy influence rooted in both 80’s and 90’s fashion, albeit with more modern cuts and tailoring.

There’s the double-breasted jacket and pants her husband rocked along with a gorgeous 80’s-inspired electric blue two-buttoned tailored just perfectly in all the right places, a handful of slouchy 90’s-inspired bohemian knits, and also several outerwear pieces— including a couple of trenches and bombers—all properly outfitted with colors and designs that feel right in place with their respective purposes. There are even a few tees slapped with phrases like “Members And Non Members Only” and “Nice One” that add a bit of playful irreverence to the collection, offering a little something for every kind of walk and personality.
